Week 1
1/23/2025
This week we learned about the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). First, we learned how to navigate the website and find specific standards for various grade levels. Then we learned about the three different dimensions that are included in each of the standards and/or performance expectations. Those three dimensions are science and engineering projects (SEP), crosscutting concepts (CCCs), and disciplinary core ideas (DCIs).
It was clear where to find the performance expectations (PE) on the standards. I have seen the PEs before while substitute teaching and going over the Iowa Core Standards in other classes. There are a lot of different components that go into the whole of a standard so those other parts are confusing to look at and understand. The abbreviations were easier to understand once I was told what they were, for example LS is describing life sciences.
Everything that I learned can be applied to my future teaching career. As an educator I need to know and understand the various parts of a standard. I will be using standards every single day whether it is preparing lessons, putting in grades, etc. I am not set on a location where I want to teach, but there is a high chance that I might end up in the state of Iowa where NGSS is used. This lesson can be used as a guide for using NGSS in my classroom.

Hi Kamryn! I really like the layout of your future classroom! I agree with you about how it was easy and helpful to find the performance expectations. I think that this is very helpful when subbing or first year teaching to help guide us in directions where our students have the most effective learning!
ReplyDeleteHi Kamryn! I agree that the abbreviations take a while to understand and know. This can definitely be a tricky part of navigating teaching resources. There is also a high chance that I will be staying in the state of Iowa to teach after graduation. I am excited to learn a lot from this course, so I am better able to teach and understand NGSS in my classroom.
